Bands: Billy Talent, Death From
Above 1979, Metric
Show Date & Location: October 4, 2004 - Club Denim (Guelph, Ontario)
On a calm and slightly chilly evening, I had the pleasure of seeing three
excellent bands put on an awesome show at Club Denim in Guelph Ontario.
Commencing at 7pm the first band to take the stage were Death From Above 1979.
Including members of Femme Fatale and Black Cat #13, the duo delivered an
abundance of wall-shaking volume. With their fondness for copious distortion and
hectic tempos, the bassplayer and singer/drummer put on an amazing effort. If
you haven't heard of these guys be sure to check them out, definitely worth a
listen.
Following up to Death From Above's opening performance was the groovy
sounding four-piece 'Metric'. Lead by female vocals, Metric has a sort of
Euro-Pop sound to them. At first I wasn't very impressed as the vocalist moved
like a robot and had very little to no energy, or though it seemed. But after a
few songs the band got the crowd moving and the rest of the set was awesome.
Songs ranging from a rather spacey alternative rock sound to almost a pop-punk
type of sound gives the band a good comparison to that of The Start. Metric is
definitely a band I'd like to hear more of.
Last but not least Billy Talent took the stage. With the venue pitch black,
and the crowd chanting 'Billy, Billy' the first few notes of 'This is How It
Goes' started playing and everybody went absolutely nuts. I would assume that
over 75% of the people there went with the intentions of seeing Billy Talent put
on an amazing show. If there are any other Billy Talent fans that attended
Edgefest at the Molson Ampitheater this past summer, you know that BT can put on
a hell of a show. Club Denim was an all ages event that had two sections near
the stage, then a highrise balcony at the back of the venue. I was on the upper
19+ level about eight feet from the stage. Ian played near my side and I swear I
got spit and sweat on about five different times during the show, it was
awesome. Playing all of the tracks from their album we were all able to sing
along. Another special part was after the show. I was with my fiancee and three
friends. After the show we decided to head to the back of the club to try and
get an autograph. Sure enough we found the tour bus and there was Ben standing
outside, talking to people and signing autographs. My fiancee is absolutely in
love with Ben and was able to get an autograph as well as a hug, what a
gentleman! If he only knew how much that meant to her. We waiting outside the
tour bus and were able to talk with Ian and get his autograph as well.
The above aforementioned after show events are what really made me appreciate
bands like Billy Talent. I'm sure the big named bands that have like 20,000 fans
per concert who would all like to meet them and sign autographs don't
necessarily have the time etc. I just found that the band was trying their best
to make an effort for their fans.
If you were in the Ontario area and were able to catch these three awesome
bands you definitely got your money's worth. My ears were ringing for three days
straight no lie. If you get the chance to see any of these bands, especially
Billy Talent, I highly recommend you do so as their live performance is sure to
be exciting.
