Buckethead - The Elephant
Man's Alarm Clock
For those who don't know who
Buckethead is, I’ll let you in on the secret. He was raised in a chicken coop by
chickens. The chickens liked him so much they, scratched his face off. Now he
could wear a mask everyday. Buckethead used to travel down the hill from the
coop. He would watch movies through a knothole in the drive inn’s fence. He
couldn’t hear what was happening in the movies, instead he would his little
guitar. So that is where the legend of Buckethead began.
The album kicks off in regular
Buckethead style, deep disembodied sounds along with a flurry of high pitched
notes. Next we shift gears into a slower more melodic number. This style is
featured heavily through out the album, each song with a characteristic of its
own. "The Elephant Mans Alarm Clock" sees a recurrence of the note choices from
the opener, along with the sporadic rhythmic choices. "Lurker At The Threshold"
Parts 1-4 are the epitome of the album, mixing parts from all over Buckethead's
career into one 4 part movement. "Oakridge Cake" has a funky hip hop flavour to
it, perhaps this is why it a tribute to "Kool Keith." "Droid Assembly" is a
stand out track, hip hop beats are the basic background beat. Meanwhile
Buckethead lays catchy rhythms and bizarre turntable like sounds over it. The
final two tracks wrap up the album fantastically.
I would recommend this album to
anyone who is interested in guitar wizardry, or curious to who this masked
wonder is. If you've never heard Buckethead before, or are along time fan
definitely pick this up. This is a brilliant showcase of the elements and
playing styles Buckethead has experimented with through out the past decade.
