Anberlin - Cities

Anberlin have always been an interesting band. Their original sound combined with a unique pop sensibility has always won fans over. The bands first album, ‘Blueprints For The Black Market’ was catchy but inconsistent. Their follow up record ‘Never Take Friendship Personal’ showed great growth from the first album and allowed the band to stand on its own. After taking such a huge step from one album to another it was hard to think that a band who have improved so much already could get any better, right? Well after listening to Anberlin’s new album ‘Cities’ you can tell that the band has done something special.

There has been a great amount of growth in two member of the band which has really helped Anberlin produce such an amazing album. Nathan Young and Stephen Christian have shown amazing growth and maturity from the last album to now. Nathan has developed into a mature drummer whose creative side really came out on this album. Stephen on the other had has always been an accomplished vocalist but had never sounded as good as he does on ‘Cities’. He has become one of rocks best vocalists and is leading Anberlin to the top of Tooth & Nail Records roster.

Anberlin’s growth becomes evident when we look back at songs like “(The Symphony Of) Blasé” and “Dance, Dance Christa Päffgen” from the last album. These are amazing songs but they are nothing compared to the songs on the new album. Yes there are the standard Anberlin pop rock songs like the lead off single “Godspeed” and the upbeat “Adelaide”, but tracks like “The Unwinding Cable Car”, “Inevitable” and “(*Fin)” are where the band shines. From solemn acoustic guitars to children’s choirs to drum circles Anberlin spare no expense for growth.

Even with these standout masterpieces the heart of this album still falls in bands ability to write a catchy tune. “Hello Alone”, “Alexithymia” and Reclusion” are three back to back to back songs that get stuck in your head after a few listens. Their underlying themes of religion combine with subtle instrumentation are what win listeners over. “Dismantle.Repair. is probably best song on the record. It is the one song that combines Anberlin’s unique pop sensibility, religion and sensitivity. The result is a fan favorite that will be sung loudly at all future concerts.

‘Cities’ could quite possibly be the best album from one of the best bands of our generation. I have not heard of anyone disliking this album so far and I think I will be hard pressed to find anyone who dislikes it anytime soon. What a masterpiece!
