Closer - Closer (EP)

This young four-piece from Columbia, SC has created a stunning EP of honestly intelligent, brash rock songs. With the lyrical moodiness of Coldplay meeting the big guitars of Stone Temple Pilots.  Composed of David Reed (vocals, guitar), Lee Summerville (guitar), David Baker(Bass) and Nathan Reed (Drums).

"This is the record we've always wanted to make. It's very real," shares vocalist/guitarist David Reed, "These songs are truly accessible, they leave so much open to the interpretation of the listener while still maintaining their individual integrity."

Closer debuts compelling tracks loaded with instantly accessible hooks and gritty realism. Their self-titled EP contains six tracks of melodic alternative rock.  Though it could be classified as pop-rock, I believe they possess a slight edge that slots them into the alternative category overall.  The first thing that caught my attention was the vocals.  I couldn’t help but notice how similar David Reed’s vocals are to that of Better Than Ezra’s front man, Kevin Griffin.  The other musicians don’t add anything extravagant to the final product, but as a whole the band sounds very fluent, polished and rehearsed.  The lead track on the album and my personal favourite is called ‘Change’.  This song has a real alternative rock feeling to it.   The chorus is very harmonic and is packed full of energy and emotion.  The guitars give the song a little bit extra with an awesome solo in this song. ‘The Obvious’ and ‘Yet To Figure’ are two other stand out tracks.  With a hard rock feel on guitars, paired with David’s sharp and penetrating vocals, make for excellent sounding tracks.

Overall I was pretty impressed with this EP.  The six tracks are well recorded and all sound excellent.  I find the vocalist rather unique, since most of us heard this style in the early 90’s.  Some of the songs do follow the same relative pattern and begin to become redundant as you progress through the EP.  I’d love to hear a full length from the band in the near future, where they could try both a slower/acoustic song, as well as a fast paced hard rock song.  I think if they pursued these avenues it would give for a well rounded sounding album.  The band itself is composed of young talented musicians that will have a very successful music career ahead of them.
