Woodale -
Finish What You Start (EP)
Remember that song "Hey Leonardo" by The Blessid Union of Souls? That song was not only a top hit on pop radio, but it was marinated in that feel-good-guitar sound. This is the same feeling I got when I started listening to Woodale's debut EP 'Finish What You Start.' Opener "Here" is the pinnacle of pop on the album, lined with piano, some orchestrations and easy melodies. "Listen For Me" leans a little towards the pop-punk form of Relient K, which would be OK if the rest of the album didn't start going in circles like a pair of lost school children (holding hands) in the woods. "She's Got A Way" is consistent with the rest of the tracks, but at this point one can tell that Woodale don't plan on singing about much more than boy-n-girl relationships, which is disappointing coming from any band. "Baby, I Can't Wait" continues going down the already-treaded path, but is evidently tiring. "Keep Driving" does just that without a new melody, and in the same progress-ignorant direction.
From listening to the first song, I thought this EP could keep me singing along, but the incessant theme of love or love-in-trouble and formula took over at halfway point. With an upcoming album planned to be recorded with Copeland's Aaron Marsh, Woodale may have more space to walk around and explore the woods before getting lost. A full album of this could be taken in 3 or 4 song doses, but 12 songs would be overbearing.
