Off Broadway - Learning How To Grow Apart

Off Broadway are a soon to be popular band combining elements of alternative, pop, and hardcore punk into their sound to create something melodic and creative, with a touch of causticity added into the mix. Their recently released EP “Learning How To Grow Apart” features three hard-hitting tracks that are sure to gain a much larger audience than your run of the mill scenester-esque band.

“You Can’t Forget Me” is easily the most melodic track on this EP, but it does feature elements of punk and alternative rock, which come off as fast-paced rhythms and even a few breakdowns here and there. “Relief” is the best track on this EP, as it features the most creativity, while also staying true to the dynamic sound structure that has always been present in Off Broadway’s songs. “Cliques & Curtain Calls” is a good song, but it definitely isn’t the best and could use some work. The vocals are really what turn the listener off in the first place because there isn’t any range or emotion conveyed from the vocalist at all. The mood of every song on this EP is conveyed more so through the music, when in actuality it should be conveyed through both the music and vocals.

The vocals on this EP are quite monotone compared to the music itself. In a way, it seems as if this band is really held back by their vocalist since, musically, they’re incredibly solid and focused. Lyrically, the EP is immensely filled with everything you’ve heard before from every band that sounds somewhat like Off Broadway. The honest truth is that the vocalist of the band needs to work out his situation and figure out how to use a more dynamic range, while creating more introspective lyrics that hit harder than the cliché “she broke my heart, I’m sad” type song.
