Machete Avenue
- The First Cuts
Based out of London Ontario, these two fine squires have transcended the scenes and images of a youth culture destined to dilute our music and art that so many of us hold so close. With only an acoustic guitar, piano, and sampler they are breathing life and fresh air back into the lungs and hearts of anyone who will listen. Machete Avenue are music to fall in love with for those who still dare to fall in love with music. The band is composed of Chad Micheal Smith (guitar/vocals) & Scott Parker (piano/vocals).
Their debut EP entitled “The First Cuts” is an album that sets a new precedent for anyone who likes their music to cut deep and stay solid.
Machete Avenue’s sound is very unique. Its basically soft acoustic guitar paired with rough, coarse and deep vocals. Each song is fairly laidback and melodic. There is much use of the piano in most songs to give it complete sound and an almost classical feel. Due to the acoustic nature of CD, I find it gives off more of a more emotional and intimate feeling than regular songs. No, there aren’t driving guitars and pounding drums. But there’s harmony amongst the vocals and the acoustic guitar gives off an almost soothing, relaxing and hypnotic feeling. Some album favorites include ‘Cuts To Pieces’ and ‘Waterfall’ which follow a very similar song pattern. My favourite track on the entire album has to be the cover of the Cyndi Lauper song ‘Time After Time’. This has to be one of the best covers of an 80’s song I have ever heard. Whenever I listen to the song I get goose bumps, I absolutely love it. ‘Before It Bleeds’ is another notable track with a powerful chorus.
Overall I think this is a very extraordinary album. I believe it’s a very unique style, and find it ultimately effective at the same time. I would be very interested to hear the band with full electric guitars, bass, drums; the works. The band has done an excellent job at sticking with what they do best, which is making great acoustic music. I hope to see and hear more from Machete Avenue in the future.
