Kaddisfly -
Set Sail The Prairie
Kaddisfly return with their second full length album and have created a concept album of sorts. ‘Set Sail The Prairie’ is the bands vision of a musical journey spanning a year with each song representing a month as well as including the Summer and Winter Solstices. To make it even more ambitions Kaddisfly have written each song based on the city they envisioned themselves being in during each month of the journey. This concept is directly reflected in the albums track listing. Each track had a name plus the name of the month, with the month in the language of the city in which the song is based in.
With such a diverse concept for an album Kaddisfly really back it up with their music. The songs that comprise ‘Set Sail The Prairie’ are as diverse as the concept and provide something for every listener. Kaddisfly’s sound combines alternative, jazz, punk and rock into one cohesive entity without coming across as crass. The instrumentation on each song is top notch and fits well with the concept of the album.
It is hard to pick out individual songs on this album because they all work so well as a whole. You can put ‘Set Sail The Prairie’ on repeat and listen to it over and over again without getting tired of the album. The only problem that this provides is that every song, as divers as they are, starts to sound the same after awhile. At times of repeat listening I could not tell where I was in the record and actually had to look at which song I was on to know what it was.
With that said a few songs really stuck out in my opinion. The first song is the first single “Campfire (Junio)”. The songs fast pace and upbeat sound catches your attention and draws you in. Once you are drawn in you notice a spacey feel to the track and a catchy chorus which you will sing along to after a few listens. The other song that really caught my attention was “Clouds (Heshvan)” which sounds similar to Coheed And Cambria. This is probably the most frantic song on the album but really gets the listener going.
When all is said and done, Kaddisfly have brought their concept album to life by backing it up musically. This concept was a huge risk for a young band looking to make a name in the music business but it really paid off. We look forward to seeing where Kaddisfly’s ambitions take them next.
