Chandelle -
The Casualties Of Casual
Los Angeles, California's sweet girl-fronted rock trio are back with their second full-length album entitled 'The Casualties of Casual,' following on the success of their 2003 self-titled debut.
Back to their same sound, Chandelle employ the same relationship-centered approach to lyrics. While it's a letdown to have a band take few steps in any direction over the span of 3 years, their sound is amicable enough to still win people over. Chandelle play poppy rock with a slight nod to indie rock, like a de-punked Donnas or rocked out Dido, yet singer Jessica Penner remains undeniably darling through it all. The album's central theme of “just friends vs. more than friends” and all the complications around it is brought forth clearly by Penner's luminous lyrics. While in some cases this approach would do little to please any listener, it works wonderfully here because she still stop to describe the scenery. This album has the same young love-drama vibe as The OC and it's cast and each song is like an episode of the show. While this albums seems destined for mainstream success on the surface, it's too humble for fans of typical rock radio and not nearly “easy” enough for pop radio. Chandelle is most probable to be featured on TV episodes of a hip new teen drama.
