For The Mathematics - We Impend (EP)

Many bands these days either change their sound constantly or recycle the same sound over and over. For The Mathematics do neither, instead they choose to push the boundaries of where their sound can go. On their debut release, ‘The New Science”, For The Mathematics mixed post hardcore and math rock creating a stunning result. You would think that the critical acclaim they received would make them happy with where they were heading but it didn’t. Instead the acclaim made them more motivated to create something as good while pushing the boundaries even further.

For The Mathematics sophomore release, ‘We Impend’, takes everything the band does to another level. The screams are more intense, the singing uses more melodies and the technical guitars are even faster than before. Despite the fact that the band has stepped everything up it seems as if the songs are more focused than the songs on their previous efforts. You might be wondering how you can focus a spastic sound. Well it’s easy, simplify your song structures and concentrate on the intensity.

The resulting songs really grasp what the band is all about on the new release. “A Versus” is a simple song with over the top screams and shrieks layered over excellent chord progression and intricate guitar work. “We Impend” takes melodies to heart and creates one of the most unique songs For The Mathematics has ever created. It even features a stab at vocal harmonies near the end. This is the perfect way for a band to follow up a critically acclaimed debut release. Just imagine what we might have got if the band would have received harsh criticism.
