Love In October - Words Of Sound (EP)

At first glance I thought Love In October was just another one of those dime-a-dozen pop/rock acts who just happened to know the right people or were in the right place at the right time. However, upon further review (i.e. actually listening to their music and researching them) I was pleasantly surprised to find these four guys have built this band from the ground up. Love In October has come an awfully long way since the band’s inception in the summer of 2006.

A quaint little EP perhaps, but Words Of Sound is wildly catchy. I found myself humming melodies from the EP only after the first three songs. Yes, it’s rather poppy, but the harmonies and rhythmic themes are complex enough to keep the listener interested. Brothers Erik and Kent Widman seem to know exactly where they want to take Love In October: from your stereo into your ears.

The most exciting tracks on the EP are ‘Method to Madness’ and “Hollywood Horror’. They immediately jumped out at me; ‘Hollywood Horror’ was the song I found myself humming after one listen. I couldn’t find anything horribly wrong with this release – my only qualm would be the eight or so minutes of silence after ‘Don’t Ask Me’. I’ve never understood why bands add prolonged amounts of essentially nothing to the end of certain songs.

I would recommend this EP if you like bands along the lines of Motion City Soundtrack, Third Eye Blind, or The Dangerous Summer.
