Biography

Close your eyes. Think about that first time, back when you were a kid, that you ate McDonalds. That big happy clown told you that McDonalds is really what you want to eat, and you believed him because hey, who wouldn’t trust a clown? Maybe your mom, tired of cleaning up after such a soul-sucking young heathen, took you there to save herself just one night of your continuing mission to throw everything put in front of you to the floor. You rolled up past those golden arches; the smell of that deep fried triple A ambrosia pulled you in, beckoning like a cheap hooker on a Vegas street corner. You sunk your gums into that first cheeseburger – pretty good, right? And what’s this? It even comes with a sweet toy?!

Now open your eyes.

Tenant is a four piece quasi-progressive-heavy-rock-slash-melodic-metal-with-some-pretty-cool-ambient-breaks band based in the glorious suburbs of Vancouver, BC. These four young stallions have been best friends for the majority of their lives, and have been playing in this band together since high school. Unlike a lot of bands, Tenant has never had a member change in their 5 years of existence, and have thus been able to work towards a unique (yeah I know, everyone says they’re unique) mesh of styles and startlingly fresh sound.

Most of Tenant’s 5 years have been spent honing their craft and getting as much experience as possible playing the Vancouver scene. Now that they’re all a little older and have played enough shows to save up and buy things like a sweet ’94 Dodge Ram van, Tenant is ready to take their sound to the masses. The young lads in Tenant just released their first full-length record – recorded independently at Mushroom Studios with Aaron Nordean and Shawn Penner – on February 24th, 2007. It’s called “All My Favourite Bands Are Breaking Up”. Yeah, I know, pretty sweet name for a CD. They know that they could probably just load it up on the internet and promote it that way, but Tenant is a little stubborn (and have a sweet ’94 Dodge Ram van) and so they’re doing a cross Canada tour in Spring ’07 to promote the new record. They got their practice by touring B.C. and Alberta last fall and figured hey, if we can go to Edmonton, we can totally go to Montreal.

So it’s game time. Tenant is about to explode. Usually when four young gentlemen explode you’d be like “GROSS!” but this time you’re going to be all “AWESOME!!”.

Yeah, awesome.

Argument

Tenant is a young band from the west coast of Canada that transcends genres but is generally classified as progressive rock. It’s hard to argue with this distinction but once you hear the bands debut record “All My Favourite Bands Are Breaking Up” you realize there is so much more to them. The band blends elements of metal, rock, jazz and pop into a catchy yet melodramatic sound. Every song that Tenant writes is as unique as their genre defying sound. From heavy guitar parts to spacey floating sounds the music runs the gamut.

The originality in Tenant’s music is what sets them apart from any other band making music today. They do not fit the cookie cutter mould for radio rock but could be heard beside some of today’s top rock outfits and fit right in. The band has used this to their advantage and has shared the stage with the like of Means, Seconds to Go, Callahan, Ghosts of Modern Man, Daggermouth, The Revolution Smile, In Medias Res, Elias and The Februarys.

Tenant has also started to create a small internet buzz about their music. The band has had over 22,000 plays on myspace from their nearly 3,000 friends. This is pretty impressive for a band whose debut record has only been out for a little over a month. Tenant has also created some noise about their live show during their cross Canada tours in the past. The band is currently on tour across Canada promoting their debut record and winning over new fans from coast to coast.

If Tenant continues to use their originality and keen music sense to their benefit then they could become one of Canada’s top musical exports. Tenant has a bright future and if they play their cards right then they could become to progressive rock what Alexisonfire is to punk rock.

Possible Labels

There are two labels that stick out as possible fits for Tenant, Equal Vision and Interscope. Equal Vision is an independent record label based out of the USA and has a roster of artists that are as unique as Tenant. The roster combined with the independent attitude of Equal Vision would allow Tenant to be as creative as possible and draw from any influences that they want to. Interscope on the other hand is at the complete other end of the spectrum as they are a major label with lots of money to back any artist that they believe in. Interscope has shown in the past that they do sign bands that do not fit the usual mould, for example Dredg. The only problem with Interscope is that they might take away a bit of Tenant’s creative freedom, as most major labels do.
